Enhancing Recovery with IASTM: A Revolutionary Manual Therapy Technique

At THE SUMMIT, we strive to provide our patients with the most advanced and effective rehabilitation techniques. One such technique that has gained significant popularity in recent years is Instrument-Assisted Soft Tissue Mobilization (IASTM). This modern manual therapy approach utilizes ergonomically designed instruments to detect and treat soft tissue abnormalities, making it an invaluable tool for individuals with conditions such as chronic inflammation, soft tissue fibrosis, or degeneration. In this blog post, we will delve into the world of IASTM, exploring its methods, benefits, and the diverse range of conditions it can effectively treat at THE SUMMIT.

The Science behind IASTM:

IASTM involves the use of specialized handheld instruments that are precisely designed to detect and address fascial restrictions and soft tissue abnormalities. By combing over the skin, skilled clinicians can identify areas of fibrosis, inflammation, or degeneration. The instruments are then applied with the appropriate amount of pressure to introduce controlled microtrauma to the affected area. This controlled microtrauma stimulates the reabsorption of excess scar tissue and initiates the healing process by breaking down adhesions and restoring full function to the soft tissue.

Methods and Techniques:

At THE SUMMIT, we utilize various IASTM methods, including Graston Technique, HawkGrips, Sound Assisted Soft Tissue Mobilization (SASTM), and Fluid Motion Soft Tissue Tools (FMST). Graston Technique, HawkGrips, and FMST Tools employ steel instruments that glide along muscles, tendons, or ligaments, enabling therapists to pinpoint the location of scar tissue or restrictions. These instruments are then skillfully used to break up the restrictions, promoting range of motion and functional recovery.

SASTM works similarly but uses sound waves to locate restrictions, which are then treated with the appropriate amount of pressure. Some patients have reported noticeable improvements after just one treatment, although most individuals typically require 8-10 treatments over a few weeks to achieve optimal results. The best part is that IASTM treatments do not require medications, providing a drug-free approach to rehabilitation at THE SUMMIT.

What to Expect:

Prior to an IASTM treatment session, patients at THE SUMMIT may be advised to engage in five minutes of cardiovascular activity to warm up the soft tissue. Ultrasound or heat treatment may also be applied to the injured area. During the treatment, our skilled clinicians will use handheld instruments to scan and treat the affected area with calculated massage techniques. Each area is usually treated for 30 to 60 seconds. Some discomfort may be experienced during the treatment, and minor bruising or small red dots (petechiae) may appear on the treated area. Applying ice for 15 to 20 minutes following treatment can help alleviate any discomfort.

Conditions Treated at THE SUMMIT:

IASTM has proven to be an effective treatment option for a wide range of conditions, including golfer's elbow, tennis elbow, carpal tunnel syndrome, neck pain, plantar fasciitis, rotator cuff tendinitis, knee pain, ankle and foot pain, myofascial pain and restrictions, musculoskeletal imbalances, chronic joint swelling, ligament sprains, muscle strains, and many more. Whether it's a post-surgical scar or a chronic musculoskeletal condition, IASTM can provide significant improvements in range of motion, pain reduction, and flexibility rejuvenation.
